10 Ways to Keep Your Kitty Cool this Summer

Posted by

Cats always seem so calm in the summer. They can be seen lounging around in sunny and shaded spots in the home or garden. As cool and relaxed as they may seem, cats can overheat just like we do.

Here are a few tips to help keep your cat cool when the temperatures rise.

  • 1.Keep their water topped up and refresh it throughout the day. Cats don’t want to drink warm water, they want something refreshing and cool. Place some ice cubes in the water on the hottest days or if you’re leaving the cat home alone for a while.
  • 2.Keep the curtains closed so they can easily find shade in the home. Shade protects against heat related health problems.
  • 3.Place a fan close to their favourite spot in the home.
  • 4.Open the windows to allow air to flow through the room. If you have an indoor cat you may need to put up screens or talk to us about a suitable cat containment system to work with your home layout.
  • 5.Make sure your cat stays out of the car. If you have to take a trip to the vets or cattery remember to bring some water for the journey and to use the air conditioning. Never leave the cat alone in the car.
  • 6.Don’t encourage your cat to play during the hottest days. Let them rest to avoid overheating and dehydration.
  • 7.Look out for signs of heat exhaustion – rapid breathing, restlessness, panting and sweaty feet are all signs. Call the vet if you notice any of these symptoms.
  • 8.Provide some cool floors for your cat to lie on in the carpeted areas of the home. A large piece of tile or hardwood will be appreciated greatly.
  • 9.Consider adding some wet food to your cat’s diet if they primarily eat dry food. Changing your cats diet will have to be done slowly to avoid an upset stomach.
  • 10.Free some wet cat food or dry cat food mixed with water into the freezer. Place it in the cat bowl once it’s frozen.
