How to Care for Your Cat in the Summer

Cats seem to enjoy the summer months just as much as we do. In fact, they probably love it more than we do as they can lounge around and soak up the heat to their hearts content. Having said that, it is worth remembering that some cats don’t deal with the heat as well as others. The care you need to provide may also change slightly too. Here are some summer cat care tips for any new cat owners or you’re preparing to adopt a cat this summer. If you’ve belonged to a cat for a long time why not read through and see if we’ve missed anything. We’d love to hear your own tips over on the ProtectaPet Facebook page.

  • Treat your cat to some extra grooming sessions. Cats do take care of themselves very well, but it’s a good idea to groom your cat to help remove the loose long and thick fur.
  • Check the garden and make sure you know the names of all the flowers and plants that your cat has access to. Many plants and flowers are toxic to cats and can even lead to fatalities. Remove or block off any that are poisonous to cats.
  • Ask your vet about suitable cat sunscreen if you have a white cat or a very pale cat. The sunscreen can be applied to their ears and the nose. Many of the sunscreens suitable for babies can be used on cats but ask your vet if you’re not sure.
  • Be extra vigilant of your cat’s food bowls, especially if you feed wet or raw food. Flies just love to come along and lay their eggs in cat food, gross!
  • Ensure there is a constant supply of fresh drinking water both inside and outside the house.
  • Keep a close eye on your feline friends. There have been multiple reports of cats being injured with airguns, reports of poisonings and the Croydon Cat Killer is still attacking cats around the UK.
  • Check all the labels of fertilizers, slug pellets and ant powders to see if they’re harmful to cats. Ask your neighbours to check too and keep cats indoors if you find they are using products that are harmful to cats.
  • Remember to check the garden shed and garages for any wondering cats before you lock the doors. Cats just love to find a nice quiet hiding place to have a quick snooze.
  • Consider cat proofing your garden with a cat containment system. This will give your cat access to the outdoors while removing many of the dangers and risks.
  • Make sure you have arranged suitable care for your cats for when you’re going away on holiday. Don’t leave them alone to fend for themselves.

Don't forget to share your favourite summer cat care tips over on our Facebook page. We'd also love to see photos of your cats enjoying the warmer weather, so come and share them with us too!
