How to Build a Mesh Canopy Over Your Window to Stop Your Cat Escaping the Garden
Cats are clever climbers and curious explorers, and sometimes, all it takes is a well-placed windowsill or flower pot for them to make a leap to escape and bypass the Cat Fence Barrier. The solution is to create a mesh canopy using a hook and wire framework. In this guide, we’ll show you how to build a simple canopy over your window to keep your cat safely within bounds.
🧰 What You’ll Need:
-
Wire cutters
-
Drill with a masonry bit (for brick walls)
-
Measuring tape
- Shears
🛠️ Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Mesh
-
Begin by measuring the distance from the edge of your overhang barrier to the window edge.
-
Using this measurement, cut a section of mesh from your 1-metre-wide roll. This will form the main covering of your canopy. In some instances, you may need a 2-meter-wide roll
Step 2: Install the Wire Support
-
Drill holes into the brickwork or mortar directly above the window, aligning with where the wire will run.
-
Screw eye hooks into the holes to create anchor points.
-
Thread the galvanised wire through the eye hooks, and tighten it to create a firm, straight line. You can increase tension by twisting the eye hook.
Step 3: Secure the Mesh Canopy
-
Use UV-resistant cable ties to attach the mesh to the wire framework above the window.
-
Stretch the mesh down and fix it to the edge of your overhang barrier.
-
Finally, use shears to trim the mesh into a clean, triangular shape that sits neatly against the wall and canopy edges.
