Cat Run Frequently Asked Questions

Researchers at the University of Lincoln interviewed more than 400 cat owners who introduced an outdoor cat runs for their cats. Both cats who had previously been used to free-roaming and indoor cats showed improved behavioural scores.

Professor Mills said: “Many owners feel conflicted about letting their cat out, because they worry about the risks, but feel their cat would appreciate being out. Understandably many owners will keep their cats inside, but our work shows that there is a practical alternative that works, and yes, the cats do benefit from being outside, and even more so when that outside environment is protected.”

A Cat Run can be described as a 'catio' (cat-patio), a cat enclosure, a cat pen or outdoor cat cage, or - where it is used in large expansive gardens without a mesh roof, it might be known as cat fencing.

Our DIY Catios are standard in in size 2.41cm D x 2.41cm W x 2.36cm H. They can be purchased in multiples to make larger Catios. If you would a bespoke Catio, we can custom design, manufacture and install this for you through our Professional Installation Service. Bespoke Catio installations start at £2,000.

Generally speaking, Catio structures are not permanent structures. Planning regulations vary by area and also it will depend on whether you want to put the Catio in your front or back garden so we advise you to contact your Local Authority for advice specific to your proposed project.

Can Runs are modular and can be designed to your bespoke requirements. Some Outdoor Cat Runs have mesh rooves. Where a cat owner wants to create a large secure area for their cat, they may prefer the cat fencing which features an inward overhanging bracket.
